MIRANSHAH-

At least 50 suspected militants were killed and 80 others were injured when gunship helicopters of Pakistan Army shelled different areas in the tribal region of North Waziristan on Wednesday, a private news channel reported.

Sources from Pakistan Army’s Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) have confirmed that 32 militants, including some key commanders and foreign militants, have been killed in the operation.

The sources add that the strikes were carried out on intelligence reports and targeted militants involved in terrorism in Peshawar, Mohamand and Bajaur agencies.

According to the news channel report, the gunship helicopters targeted militant hideouts in Zara Mala, Esorti and Mosaki areas of Mir Ali Tehsil as well as parts of NW agency, Miranshah.

Many of the injured were reported critical. The death toll is expected to rise, adds the report.

The precision strikes come two days post the abduction of a Chinese tourist.

As the 40-day ceasefire declared between the Pakistani Government and banned militant outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) came to an end on April 17th, security forces were often targeted by militant groups.

Pakistani military has frequently retaliated the attacks by airstrikes on militant hideouts in the tribal region.

TTP had announced not to extend the ceasefire-but- added that the dialogue process would go on if the government shows its commitment to the demands put up by the group and takes required steps.

The government, during a cabinet committee meeting headed by Prime Minister Nawaz Shairf, decided to continue the peace process with TTP on a ‘wait and see’ policy.
