Pakistan State Oil (PSO), the national oil company, on Tuesday ran out of jet fuel rendering itself unable to supply fuel to any domestic or international flight.

Following the development, PSO suspended fuel supplies to all airliners at Karachi airport. According to reports, PSO was trying to arrange fuel for the international flights on emergency basis.

Reports said several national institutions including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) were defaulters of Rs180 billion.

The shortage was a result of stoppage of fuel supply to PSO by national oil refineries because of the debt. Reportedly, PSO owes Rs18 billion to local refineries and 80 billion to foreign companies.

PSO demanded national flag carrier PIA to make the due payment of Rs7 billion. Major airliners refuel at Karachi airport and the shortage of jet fuel can cause in delays and even cancelation of flights.
