LAHORE-

63 politicians, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari, were issued notices by the Lahore High Court on Tuesday during a court hearing of a petition filed to bring back the politicians’ foreign assets to Pakistan, a private news channel report.

The petition, filed by Barrister Javed Iqbal Jafri, asserts that the politicians’ assets illegally transferred to foreign countries should be brought back to free the country of external debt.

The court bench, headed by Justice Khalid Mahmood, issued notices to 63 politicians for submitting their replies.

The politicians included PM Sharif, Zardari, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan and Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain among others.

The court also ordered to notify the respondents through advertisements and adjourned the hearing till June 1.

The petition was originally filed in 1996 against 26 politicians. Barrister Jafri later amended the petition, adding 40 more names to it.

He stated that at least $300,000 million were transferred to foreign countries through money laundering by these politicians, causing a massive loss to the national treasury.
