Sheikh Rashid says democracy facing severe threat from inside

Democracy is facing severe threat and the rulers should show sagacity in this situation, said Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed while addressing a ceremony at Karachi Shohada Hall at the Lahore High Court on Tuesday.

Sheikh Rashid said a unique kind of democracy exists in Pakistan and it was not like the democracies of US UK or the europe. He claimed that he can say it with conviction that there was not a single political party or political leader in Pakistan who has not gone through the ‘nursery of dictatorship’. However, he said, the existing democracy in the country was genuine.

He said the country was confronted by several problems. He said on one side there was Narindra Modi while on other sides there were Abdullah Abdullah and Hasina Wajid. He said the government was facing no external problem but problem from within.

The AML chief while repeating the allegations of rigging in four constituencies said if rigging proved in any one of these constituencies then it will certainly cast impact on the democracy.

Criticising the former government of the PPP, he said that it could not arrest the killers of Benazir Bhutto during its five-year rule.

He also appealed to the lawyers’ community to reduce their protests.
