Lawyers flex their muscles against Geo

Lawyers belonging to various bar associations Monday boycotted the court proceedings besides holding protest demonstrations while courts in different cities ordered to register cases against Geo TV for airing blasphemous content on its morning show.

Thousands of lawyers across the country took to streets with banners and placards inscribed with anti-Geo slogans.

In Gujranwala, Additional Sessions Judge Mansoor Ahmed Khan issued verdict on five petitions, directing the authorities to file a case against the TV channel. The court has directed the Civil Lines police station house officer to record statements of the complainants and take action accordingly.

Plaintiffs had requested court to nominate the TV channel’s owner, morning show host, her team, guests and others in the first information report (FIR).

Kausar Iqbal Shah filed a petition in Okara District and Sessions Court. Judge Safdar Saleem Shahid summoned the divisional police SHO in this regard.

Shahid had ordered registration of a case against the TV channel two days ago.

Rawalpindi Additional Sessions Judge Tahir Khan Niazi ordered Nasirabad and New Town police stations to register cases against the TV channel under 295-A, 295-B, 295-C, 298-A and 7-ATC.

In Nankana Sahib, an additional sessions judge ordered the police to book 10 accused. The plea was filed by Ashraf Gujjar.

Meanwhile, petitions against the alleged blasphemy have also been filed in Peshawar and Battagram courts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
