NEW DELHI-
Indian opposition leader Narendra Modi appeared headed for a landslide win Friday as results began pouring in from the country’s massive general election, with early trends suggesting Modi’s party will easily push out the long-dominant Congress party.
The Election Commission was expected to announce full results later Friday. But early trends suggested that Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party would earn enough parliamentary seats to create a government without forming a coalition with regional leaders.
At BJP headquarters in New Delhi, workers were handing out sweets, setting off firecrackers and dancing in the streets outside. BJP spokeswoman Nirmala Seetharaman said the results were even better than expected.
“That certainly is good news, which we will savor with great delight,” she said. “It means that people of India found the (connection) with Narendra Modi.”
There was a record turnout in the election, with 66.38 percent of India’s 814 million eligible voters casting ballots during the six-week contest, which began April 7 and was held in stages across the country. Turnout in the 2009 general election was 58.13 percent.
Campaigning on promises of a revival in economic growth, Modi and the BJP were looking to take advantage of widespread dissatisfaction with the Congress party.
The BJP’s slick and well-financed campaign also promised better governance. The Congress-led ruling alliance has been plagued by repeated corruption scandals, and the Congress party’s 43-year-old leader, Rahul Gandhi, appeared to have failed to inspire public confidence.
Exit polls by at least six major Indian TV stations predicted a BJP-led coalition would win between 249 and 289 seats in the 543-seat Lok Sabha, or lower house of Parliament. A party or coalition needs at least 272 seats to form a government.
According to the Election Commission, early vote counting for 444 seats showed the BJP ahead in 257 seats and the Congress in 45. The rest were divided among a handful of smaller parties.
If BJP crosses the 272-mark, it would be the first time a single party has won a majority since the 1984 national election.
Two of the BJP’s declared allies, the Shiv Sena and the Shiromani Akali Dal, were also leading in 13 and five seats, respectively, which took the lead for the BJP-led alliance to 275 seats.
By Friday afternoon, an exact picture was expected to emerge on what India’s next Parliament will look like.
If the results are in line with the exit polls and the early trends and the BJP and its allies win a clear majority, India’s stock markets are likely to see a major upswing. Already on Friday, the Sensex stock index rose as much as 4.7 percent on news of the BJP’s strong showing.
The Nehru-Gandhi family, which has ruled India for all but 10 years since the country won independence from British rule in 1947, is facing its biggest political drubbing in 10 years. The Congress party attempted to position Rahul Gandhi as a young leader capable of boosting the country’s struggling economy, but most Indians see him as being out of touch with reality. His privileged background has made him appear aloof and removed from the concerns of most Indians.
In comparison, Modi’s campaign was seen by many as a media and marketing coup for a man whose background ties him to bloodshed in his home state of Gujarat, where communal rioting in 2002 left more than 1,000 people dead, most of them Muslims. Modi is accused of doing little to stop the rampage, though he denies any wrongdoing and has never been charged with a crime.
He managed to hammer away at Gandhi — specifically the perception that he is nothing more than a feudal prince from a family that views ruling the country as its birthright.

Clicking on the handle “MichaelHayden” shows that only one comment had been made under this account which was apparently created to post the above response to my comment reproduced below. On August 9, 2008 when CIA Director Michael Hayden and K. Subrahmanyam came on line and posted their comments on an article of mine, my browser was apparently being re-directed so that what they posted could be seen by me but not by the public at large; but the response above seems to have been posted without re-directing my browser to a dummy website.
A couple hours later saw that “MichaelHayden” had posted the same response to my comments on six other stories, in IndiaDOTcom and abpliveDOTin .
RAW has continued to post a torrent of abuse on what I say; for example I posted the following comment on a defence blog, LivefistdefenceDOTcom, on a story titled “Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Is India’s Next Army Chief” :-

A couple days ago I posted a comment on outlookindiaDOTcom. A couple hours later I found that there were 4 ‘Dislikes’ on my comment and 0 ‘Likes’. A few minutes later, I found that the number of ‘Dislikes’ had been reduced from 4 to 3; the number of ‘Likes’ was still 0. CIA-RAW, which has kept me under 24-hour surveillance with the U.S. National Security Agency satellites for the past 37 years (see below) had done this with microwave signals from satellites; ordinary users can INCREASE the number of ‘Dislikes’ by pressing the ‘Dislike’ button but there is no way they can DECREASE the number of ‘Dislikes’. CIA-RAW routinely controls the number of hit-counts on my blogs, to take another example and can and does put false numbers, usually a small fraction of the actual number, in the hit counters. Note that falsification of vote counts in Electronic Voting Machines does not require the machines to be defective or physically tampered with; it is done electronically via microwave signals from satellites which leave no trace. (October 5, 2008) SOURCE OF MANMOHAN SINGH’S ‘DEEP LOVE’ FOR BUSH
Indian politicians have condemned Manmohan Singh’s telling Bush that the people of India “deeply love” him. They should see the source of Indians’ love for the white man as I explained many months ago (see my blog titled ‘Nuclear Supremacy For India Over U.S.’ ) :-
“There is a basic difference between the treason of Indira, Rajiv and Vajpayee and that of Manmohan Singh. The holocaust after 1857 in which the British killed over ten million Indians in just the first decade in just Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Bihar to terrorize and subdue them was in large part committed with the help of Sikhs. This terrorization and subduing continued right up to the end of direct British rule, exemplified by the Sikh soldier, riding in a jeep with the British viceroy, cutting down with his submachine gun any Indian, man, woman or child, that came in view on either side of the road. The role of the Sikhs, who were originally founded to save India from foreign invaders — the invaders were then Muslims — reversed from 1857 on and they became a principal instrument of the British terrorization and subjugation of India. The Sikhs know how successful this terrorization and subjugation was — it is this terrorization and subjugation because of which Indians today dare not even mention nuclear supremacy for India much less demand it — and their role in it determines their attitude toward whites and toward Indians. This is why Manmohan Singh considers himself answerable to no one except Bush and the white man as he imposes the terrorization and subjugation of the nuclear deal on India, makes no attempt to hide his loyalty to the white man and shows open contempt for Indians…. Like Manmohan Singh and others praising British rule over India (he did that when receiving an honorary doctorate from Cambridge University; he was prime minister of India at the time), there are many Indians who praise American rule over India. Like the many Indians loyal to Queen Victoria, there are many Indians loyal to the white woman illegitimately living in the prime ministerial residence, illegitimately flying in the Air Force’s special jets and giving orders to destroy India [she was treated as the empress of India even before she held any party or government post and all visiting heads of state were required to call on her at her residence; this was so even during BJP governments at the Center]. … In war, officers are under orders to execute on the spot any soldiers who are too terrorized to fight or obey orders to advance on enemy positions. … The terrorization and subjugation Indians have undergone at the hands of the British is responsible for Indians refusing to even mention, much less demand, nuclear supremacy over the United States. It is necessary to execute — machine gun and bulldoze into trenches — at least a few thousand such Indians, who are in key positions — such as RAW employees, politicians and media people — to obstruct India’s nuclear supremacy (they may be terrorized or bought up or both though being bought up is greatly facilitated by being terrorized; the terror, when long standing, is usually repressed meaning unconscious and being subjugated often involves both terror and carrot but terror is the foundation of the treason of RAW employees and people such as Vajpayee and Mani Shankar Aiyar though all they may feel is love and loyalty for the white man; terror facilitates such love [emphasis added]; a former head of RAW, Vikram Sood, in a column in Hindustan Times, repeatedly quoted the white/Christian head of the missionary school he attended as the fount of all wisdom on various issues and referred to Indians as worshippers of snakes and monkeys on a Times of India blog — I have referred in a letter below to RAW arranging for practitioners of an Indian discipline, whose understanding of gravity and inertia I called superior to that of Albert Einstein, to be physically attacked and driven away in Noida and Madhya Pradesh on the C.I.A.’s orders — but such behavior of RAW employees, the behavior of desi people like Laloo Yadav and even thoroughly devout and traditional Indians and of all Indians in everyone’s household, neighbourhood and community is profoundly determined by the terrorization and subjugation the British inflicted on Indians and this terrorization and subjugation is responsible for the fact that no Indian dares to even mention, much less demand, nuclear supremacy for India …), for India’s nuclear supremacy to go forward.”
Since I wrote the above, I have said that, instead of being machine-gunned and bulldozed into trenches, Indians in a position to obstruct India’s nuclear supremacy over the most powerful white country will be destroyed with the nuclear destruction of New Delhi (see my blog titled ‘Nuclear Supremacy For India Over U.S.’ ).
A few more hours later found that MichaelHayden’s comments now total 14, including his responses to some Indians who responded to my comment.
