Lawyers on Monday observed black day and boycotted court proceedings across the Rawalpindi district to condemn the May 12, 2007 incident in which over 50 innocent people, including lawyers were killed in Karachi.
Lawyers wore black armbands to observe a full-day strike on the call of the Pakistan Bar Council and stayed away from court proceedings at all level to express solidarity with family members of their colleagues, who lost their lives on the fateful day.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi Bench, anti-terrorism courts, special courts, Judicial Complex Rawalpindi, local courts in Murree, Taxila, Kotli Sattian, Gujjar Khan, Kallar Syedan and banking courts gave a deserted look.
The lawyer bodies held condemnation references and hoisted black flags at bar rooms to condemn the incident.
Bar associations passed several resolutions while condemning the incident and demanding immediate arrest of the perpetrators behind the May-12 tragedy. They also demanded to ensure foolproof security to judges and lawyers.
In a district court, Civil Judge Kashif Qayyum Khan adjourned the hearing of Aila Malik’s fake degree case without any proceeding due to the lawyers strike.
