Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and discussed issues of mutual interests in a meeting held on Sunday at the Cultural Historical Complex of Saadabad in northern Tehran.
The Pakistani premier reached the Iranian capital on Sunday morning on a two-day official visit which is taking place upon an invitation by President Rouhani.
According to reports, Prime Minister Sharif is to take part in a dinner banquet given to his honor by President Rouhani. The Pakistani premier was officially welcomed by First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri.
Prime Minister Sharif’s visit to Tehran is his first since the formation of new governments in the two neighboring countries.
Sources said that several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements for mutual cooperation in different sectors are to be signed during the visit.
Both the leaders reiterated their determination to increase volume of bilateral trade to five billion dollars. They also agreed to continue the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project.
“Pakistan wants to open a new chapter of relations,” said PM Sharif.
