Passengers traveling abroad to get free polio vaccination

A high-level meeting to review travel restrictions imposed by World Health Organisation (WHO) on Pakistan against polio spread decided on Friday to provide free polio vaccination and certificates to citizens traveling abroad.

The meeting held in Karachi was attended among others by head polio project Sindh and health department officials. The meeting reviewed steps to be taken in the wake of travel restrictions imposed by the WHO.

The meeting was informed that special counter had been set up at the airport to facilitate travelers regarding polio vaccination and issuance of certificates.

  1. polio vaccine (OPV) contains an attenuated (weakened) vaccine-virus, activating an immune response in the body. When a child is immunized with OPV, the weakened vaccine-virus replicates in the intestine for a limited period, thereby developing immunity by building up antibodies.
