RAWALPINDI-
An alleged associate of extortionists from Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was arrested in Rawalpindi, a police official said.
During a media briefing on Monday, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Omer Akhtar Hayat Laleka said that the arrested, Haji Naeem, was a hosiery trader and allegedly helped TTP in extorting money from businessmen in Rawalpindi.
A few days ago, Naeem has staged an act of his kidnapping for ransom, added Laleka.
The RPO said that Naeem confessed of providing TTP group members with phone numbers of the traders and wealthy people. The TTP men would then call their targets for extortion.
LaIeka added that SIMs (subscriber identity module) issued in Afghanistan were used by the extortionists at times.
Three other suspects involved in extortion were also arrested but their links with TTP or any other group have not been found, said the RPO.
