5.6 magnitude tremors jolt parts of KP

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in the early hours of Sunday.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the border area of Afghanistan and Tajikistan at a depth of 120 kilometer.

According to the Met Department, tremors were felt in Peshawar, Malakand Division, Chitral, Kohistan and adjoining areas.

However, there were no reports of any damages or casualties.

KUDOS TO ERRA:

Earthquake Reconstruction, Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) has successfully completed 40,000 rooftop rain harvesting systems in earthquake-affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) at the cost of Rs.500 million.

ERRA Deputy Chairman Major General Azeem Asif told APP that 248 public buildings have been selected for installation of rain harvesting system in Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Murree.

Outlining the details of the project, Water and Sanitation Project Coordinator Syed Zaheer Hussain Gardezi said 123 systems would be installed in AJK, 95 in KP and 30 projects will be installed in Murree to utilise the rainwater for drinking, washing and other uses.

He said that due to successful implementation of ERRA’s rain harvesting programme in KP, AJK and Murree, Climate Change Division (CCD) of Pakistan and Galiyat Development Authority KP have approached ERRA for implementing similar projects in Islamabad and the Galiyat area of KP.

For this purpose, KP will spend Rs 73 million and the CCD will provide Rs 60 million to utilise rainwater for multiple purposes, Gardezi said.

The 3.5 million earthquake affected population of KP and AJK has been targeted to disseminate the concept of rain harvesting system to mitigate the water shortage problem.
