Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan condemned excessive power loadshedding on Thursday saying it targets the poor and middle classes as the elite and rulers have generators as energy backup.

In a statement, Khan said loadshedding has reached new heights with rural areas suffering loadshedding of around 18 hours and urban areas around 12 hours.

He demanded that the government inform the people why they had to face increased hours of loadshedding when the government had paid Rs 500 billion to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) by borrowing money, printing notes and doubling electricity bills.

Khan condemned biased rise in power tariffs of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). He sought an explanation as to why line losses remain at the same level as they were during the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)-led federal government.

He asked why bill recovery was even lower now than it was during the PPP-led government.

Imran said the industry and agriculture sector were being destroyed due to power cuts, which was unacceptable.
