Department of Health Extended Program on Immunization (EPI) Punjab in collaboration with Save the Children Pakistan Program launched its ‘Immunization Documentary’ on Wednesday at a local hotel to mark World Immunization Week being celebrated globally from April 24 to April 30.

The documentary highlights the challenges and the present situation of immunization among children in Pakistan. It attempts to expose the myths related to vaccination of children under the age of five in rural areas of the country and documents various case studies where vaccination has saved the lives of many children. The documentary encompasses the issues of insufficient human resource as well as scarce number of vaccinators that impacts universal access of vaccination services.

Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister for Health Khawaja Salman Rafique was the chief guest at the event. EPI Director Dr Muneer Ahmed, Dr Huma Khawar, renowned pediatrician Dr Naeem Zafar, Provincial Coordinator for FP & PHC Dr Javaid Umar, Assistant Director MNCH Punjab Dr Mubashar Rana and Save the Children Pakistan Program officials attended the launch.

Salman Rafique appreciated the initiative of launching the documentary to mark World Immunization Week saying, “Save the Children has always been on the forefront in advocating children’s rights and by launching this impressive documentary; it has yet again registered its concern for deaths of children which can be prevented by timely vaccination.”

The Punjab Government is concerned over the situation and taking appropriate measures to make the vaccination system more efficient and result oriented, he said.

According to statistics, 27 percent deaths among children under the age of five in Pakistan are due to diseases that can be prevented through vaccination.
