The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government on Friday stuck to its initial demand to hold local government (LB) elections under a biometric system.

In a letter written to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the PTI-led government argued that it could wait even six months if the need arose to introduce the biometric system in the province.

The KPK government insisted that the LB polls would be conducted only under the biometric system.

Earlier this month, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had said that it was ready to hold the LB polls and all arrangements, including the most-delaying delimitation process, in this regard had been completed and it was only the matter of the ECP’s approval. The ECP had subsequently given a go-ahead to this report, announcing to hold LB election in the province before June 30. It had however, said that installation of biometric system across KPK would delay the LB polls, that is why it would only be taken up as a pilot project the Ghazi area of the province.
