President Mamnoon Hussain on Wednesday said the government is committed to develop agriculture on scientific lines to ensure food security.
Addressing a function, he said the national food security policy was being chalked out in collaboration with the provincial governments. The president said the government is developing cooperation with the developed countries in different sectors including agriculture.
He hailed the services of Dr Norman E Barlaug of the US for promotion of agriculture in Pakistan. Dr Barlaug cooperated with Pakistan in developing Mexipak wheat seed which resulted in green revolution in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan said one hundred and thirty varieties of wheat seeds have been introduced in the country during the last fifty years.
US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard G Olson said cooperation between the US and Pakistan in agriculture started in 1960s. He said the Wheat Productivity Enhancement Project has been launched with the financial assistance of the US. The project is being completed at a cost of $11.5 million. Later, the president gave away awards to three agriculture scientists for their contribution to food security.
