PTI and PAT seek verification of thumbprints in last year’s general elections

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri are set to join hands for a major show of strength on May 11 to press the government for carrying out immediate verification of thumb impressions in last year’s general elections, Pakistan Today has learnt reliably.

The joint show is likely to concern the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif which is already facing a plethora of problems since assuming power last year.

According to sources in the PML-N government, the PML-N is reluctant to appoint a new chief election commissioner (CEC) and both the Pakistan People’s Party and PML-N are on the same page as both parties are being accused of massive rigging during the elections.

According to well-placed sources in both PTI and PAT, the workers of both parties will converge in the federal capital on May 11 to put up an impressive show of strength. “For the same reason, Imran Khan has cut short his foreign visit and returned to make preparations for the May 11 show. He had visited UK to meet his children but he returned only after a few days to monitor the arrangements,” the sources added.

When contacted, PTI spokesman Chaudhry Rizwan told Pakistan Today that his party was going to hold a huge demonstration to protest against the government’s reluctance to concede to PTI’s requests for thumbprint verifications.

“Since the judiciary has also turned down our requests, we have decided to move the court of the people of Pakistan. We will not sit idle till we get justice and will prove that the May 11 polls were hugely rigged,” he added.

Asked whether or not the PAT workers would join the demonstration, Rizwan said he had heard of it.

“I can’t confirm it right now. But I have heard that PAT leadership and workers may also join our protest,” he maintained.

The PAT spokesman could not be reached for comment.
