ISLAMABAD-
The Supreme Court has suspended a notification declaring Ahle-Sunnat Wal Jamaat leader Maulana Ahmed Ludhianvi as the winning candidate from Jhang NA-89, a private news channel reported.
Ludhianvi was declared the winner by an election tribunal after disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Sheikh Muhammad Akram.
The tribunal had ruled the disqualification of Akram on a petition filed by Ludhianvi in which he alleged that Akram was a loan defaulter.
Ludhianvi had further stated in the petition that as envisaged by Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution, Akram was ineligible to run for election as he was not ‘sadiq and ameen’ ( truthful and trustworthy).
Akram Sheikh moved the Supreme Court against the tribunal’s ruling.
In today’s hearing, a three-member bench headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali suspended Ludhianvi’s victory notification saying that the tribunal’s decision was not based on substantial reasons.
The tribunal did not take into account the ground realities in the constituency and the number of votes each candidate received, added the bench.
The court issued notices to all respondents and ordered the tribunal to reassess the case and inform the court within three months.
Maulana? What is the qualifications required to become one? Is not mavlvi sufficient?
