Chancellor of Ziauddin University Dr Asim Hussain has said that doctors and other health professionals need to respond positively to changes not only to contribute but also to help the suffering humanity.
He was addressing the 11th convocation of Ziauddin University on Saturday. As many as 350 graduating students were awarded degrees in various professional fields at the convocation.
Dr Asim Hussain congratulated the graduating students. He said only 42 MBBS students had passed out from the first medical batch of 53 students in 2001 and now the figure has hit around 2,000 degree holders in eight different disciplines in 2014.
He advised the graduating students to gain and develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, honesty and behaviour of good human beings. “Situations and environments change but virtues and ambitions do not – this is character,” he added.
The chancellor said that advances in the biomedical field are occurring at an accelerating pace, as knowledge is changing so rapidly that it has been stated that 50 percent of what is taught today will be altered in 5 years, which puts a heavy responsibility on the present health professionals to keep up-to-date.
Dr Asim Hussain said that the Ziauddin University is going to start a BS programme in Social Sciences very soon, adding that for this purpose the university has hired a very senior foreign qualified professor as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
In his speech, Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor of Ziauddin University, felicitated the graduating students, and appreciated their hard work and dedication.
He said that learning is a continuous process. “We should crave for learning with application of our knowledge for betterment of the society.” He said the university now offered 10 different programmes in various areas of applied sciences.
