  • SC orders govt to present DNA reports of mass grave bodies by May 6

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday sought report from the Defence Ministry on the proceedings being initiated against army officers involved in enforced disappearances.

The two-member SC bench led by Justice Nasirul Mulk, while hearing the Balochistan violence case, also directed the Punjab government’s forensic laboratory to furnish the DNA reports of the dead bodies recovered from Khuzdar by May 6.

Justice Mulk expressed inquisitiveness over the delay in DNA reports.

He said, “Maintaining law and order situation in province is legal and constitution obligation of the state. Occurrence of such incidents daily is alarming and cannot be overlooked. We cannot see chaos in Balochistan and the elements involved in enforced disappearances should be punished as per law.”

The court was told during the course of hearing that the government had decided to try the Frontier Corps (FC) and army personnel under the Army Act for their involvement in enforced disappearances in Balochistan.

Justice Anwar Zahir Jamali said, “Recovery of dead bodies from mass graves is a matter of grave concern. The problems will not be resolved unless rule of law and Constitution prevails in this country. Balochistan is burning and no one is caring for it.”

Report on recovery of dead bodies from mass graves in Khuzdar was presented before the court wherein it was said that the DNA test could take four to five months.

The court expressed annoyance over the report, remarking that the test should not take so much time.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till May, 6.
