Memon defends ‘operation’

Chaotic scenes were witnessed in the Sindh Assembly after an adjournment motion tabled by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was declared as against rules by a member from the treasury benches.

The motion had been tabled in protest of what the party called “extrajudicial killings and arrests” of its activists.

The motion was submitted by MQM’s parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly Mohammad Hussain and was rejected by Sindh Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro who declared it to be in violation of House rules. The Opposition members erupted in protest against the decision following which members from both the treasury and opposition benches engaged in sloganeering.

The mover talked on admissibility, however, the chair ruled the motion non-maintainable. On this, the MPAs of the MQM protested strongly. They tore the copies of agenda of the day and raised slogans. Their protest continued till the chair adjourned the session amid uproar till Friday at 10 AM.

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon Tuesday dispelled the impression that any particular party was being targeted in Karachi’s targeted operation.

“It is a wrong perception that specific people are the target of operation,” Memon told media persons after the Sindh Assembly’s session. The information minister defended the operation saying that it had produced positive results.

The Sindh IG has already set up a committee to track down MQM’s missing workers, he said. “The IGP has said that no MQM worker is in police custody,” he said.

“It is easy to make claims of extra-judicial killing, but it is harder to prove,” Memon added.
