Reserved platoons be kept alert as backup to police stations: IG

Sindh Inspector General (IG) Police Iqbal Mehmood Sunday called for keeping reserved platoons alert at the police headquarters for providing backup support to police stations in the wake of the ongoing targeted action against criminals in Karachi.

The IG, presiding over a meeting about law and order here, directed all the districts’ SSPs to take steps to properly train officers and jawans deployed at police stations. He said the measures should be taken for firing practice from the DIGs to constables, and for this purpose Zonal DIGs should ensure firing practice by two police officers and two jawans at the Police Firing Range on a daily basis.

About the incidents of murders in the city, he said protection to the life and property of the people was the responsibility of police, adding that a strategy had been devised for scrutinising the performance of every officer and jawan.

Iqbal Mehmood emphasised upon the importance of investigation of cases and prosecution and directed the station investigation officers (SIOs) and SHOs to prepare lists of accused and convicts. He said investigation officers should ensure pursuing the cases and arrest of proclaimed offenders through targeted actions. The IG said relevant SHO would promptly reach crime scenes to save it and the SIO would collect evidence from there, while forensic division’s officials would also be called to save evidence through advanced procedures.
