School vans, buses with faulty CNG kits to be impounded

Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Siddiqui on Wednesday said school buses and vans fitted with substandard or faulty CNG kits would be impounded.
He said this chairing a meeting to review the pace and progress of campaign launched against insecure public vehicles, mainly those of obsolete models and also that are being run on faulty gas cylinders or sub-standard CNG kits,
He said public life could not be put at risk under any pretext, hence strict action would continue to be taken against school vans and buses along with other vehicles, found using faulty CNG kits.
He said the ongoing snap checking must put equal attention towards school buses and vans, adding that administration would not succumb to any pressure in its endeavour.
Regional Transport Authority Secretary Ghazanfar Ali Qadri informed the meeting that during snap checking on Tuesday and Wednesday noon 144 vehicles were challaned and a fine of Rs 164,400 was imposed while nine of the vehicles violating the maintenance and safety standards were impounded.
He said concerned assistant commissioners, SP-Traffic Police,
HDIP technician alongwith RTA staffers are part of the teams conducting snap checking across the metropolis.
Qadri said owners and drivers of school buses found violating the required safety standards were strictly warned and given a minimum time bar for removal of faulty kits and cylinders.
The commissioner, however, directed him that no concession should be extended to any violator particular those used by children and commoners.
“These are extremely precious lives,” he reiterated.
The meeting among others was also attended by additional commissioner, Muhammad Aslam Khoso, director, Local Government, Rubina Asif, assistant commissioner (general), Shahzaib Shaikh and others.
