Protection of Pakistan Ordinance challenged in Supreme Court

ISLAMABAD-

The Protection of Pakistan Ordinance (PPO) granting security forces sweeping powers for arrest and detention was challenged in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, a private news channel reported.

In the petition, social worker and advocate Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi has raised objection over the formulation and passing of the law from National Assembly.

The petitioner states that PPO violates the basic human rights.

On April 7, PPO was hastily passed in the National Assembly amid strong resistance from the opposition.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other parties had threatened to challenge the law in the apex court.
The ordinance will be tabled in the Senate on April 14.

PPO was approved by President Mamnoon Hussain last year.
