PM says Pakistan supports democratic process

  • Says the government believes in non-interference in Afghanistan; opposes arms race in the region

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that Pakistan believes in the policy of non-interference and supports the democratic process in Afghanistan, adding that Pakistan’s our soil would not be used against Afghanistan.

The prime minister made these remarks Wednesday during a meeting with Kim Darroch, UK’s national security advisor, who called on him at PM House.

Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan does not want to fall into an arms race and wants peace and stability in the region.

“There is a need to enhance investment in social sectors of health and education, and we have taken steps towards these ends,” the PM said, adding that the Pakistani nation appreciates the UK’s support for Pakistan in the social sector.

The prime minister said that Pakistan is facing huge challenges. The major issues faced are economy, energy and terrorism. Our progressive policies have shown positive results in the economy, while we have taken concrete steps to overcome the energy crisis. In order to tackle the issue of terrorism we have evolved consensus, amongst all the stakeholders, for dialogue, the PM told the guest delegation.

Kim Darroch, said the UK supports the objectives of Pakistan’s Internal Security. He also expressed his confidence in Pakistan’s economic policies and added that the economy is poised to take off.

The UK’s Chief of Defense Staff General Nicholas Houghton, Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan Simon Gass Special, British High Commissioner to Pakistan His Excellency Philip Barton, Advisor to PM Satraj Aziz and Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatimi also attended the meeting.
