The city administration has decided to take strong action against the milk sellers indulged in overcharging.
The decision was taken at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui on Tuesday.
The meeting, which was attended by all the sub-divisional magistrates of Karachi, Additional Commissioner Haji Ahmed, assistant commissioners and other concerned officials, was convened in consequence of public complaints pouring in about arbitrary increase in milk price by milk sellers.
The commissioner issued strict warning to the milkmen for violating the officially-approved price list and asked them to follow the official price list or face legal action.
He also asked the consumers not to pay a single penny above the approved price and register their complaint against those shopkeepers selling milk and other essential items over and above the fixed rate on telephone numbers 99204334-99204790.
The commissioner also set up an 11-member committee to be headed by Additional Commissioner II Haji Ahmed to fix new price of milk and convene its meeting on Thursday. The other members of the committee would be from the livestock department, media, human rights, consumers rights protection council and other stakeholder. Fresh milk price will be fixed with the consultation and agreement of all stakeholders.
The commissioner said the government wanted growth of dairy industry for which it was ready to assist and facilitate the concerned businessmen and investors but to achieve that end they should have to respect and abide by the government orders and price list instead of challenging its writ.
He said the growth of dairy industry would not only benefit the businessmen but also the consumers as reduction in prices of dairy products would also reflect government’s policy of providing relief to a common man.
By our silence, by our apathy, by our acceptance of the status quo, aren’t we nodding our approval and expressing our blessings to the government and its policies. Do we really accept their dictate?
