Sirajul Haq was elected as chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), succeeding Munawwar Hassan, on Sunday.
Haq, who is serving as senior minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) coalition government, has been elected as the Jamat Amir for the next five years.
Syed Munawar Hassan and JI Secretary General Liaqat Baloch were also running in the election for the new JI chief.
Voting for the election was held throughout the country and counting of votes started on March 29.
About 32,400 card-holder JI members elected their new ameer through secret ballot process spanning over two months.
Sirajul Haq is expected to resign from his current designation in the KPK government as the finance minister of the province.
