You’ve one week to appoint IGP, SC warns govt

The Supreme Court (SC) ordered the government of Sindh to appoint the Sindh IG Police within seven days and present a notification before the court.

The SC bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussain Jillani took up implementation of apex court’s order in Karachi violence case on Friday.

During the course of hearing, the CJP inquired from the advocate general (AG) that what progress had been made regarding appointment of the IG Police. The AG replied that the court had given one week time for induction of the IGP. On this, Justice Amir Hani Muslim remarked: “Only one day time was given but not the whole week.

However, Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Aslam Butt told that three names were sent by the federation to the provincial government but no reply had been received yet from the Sindh government.

The AG said the IGP was appointed as per the will of chief minister in Punjab but in Sindh the situation was other way round. The Sindh government had also forwarded three names to the federation as the CM was not satisfied with the names sent by the federation to him because they were unable to maintain law and order in the province.

Justice Amir Hani Muslim remarked: “What are you talking about! Can one person maintain law and order? Give us the name of that one person who can establish peace and we will recommend the federation to appoint him as IGP.

The CJP said: “Differences among them are affecting peace in Karachi. Therefore, ring up chief minister just now for nomination of name for the slot of IGP. We will recommend the federation to appoint him IG Sindh.”

The AG told the court after interval that final name for the slot of IGP would be sent to the federal government till Monday and appointment of the IGP would be made soon. The CJP remarked: “Situation in Karachi is deteriorating with every passing day but the government is undecided over the appointment of IG. We are not concerned with the names. We just want the government to present before the court notification for appointment of IGP within a week.”
