Ordinance promulgated to run PMDC affairs: Saira

Presidential ordinance dissolves PMDC, suspends executive committee over forged elections 

Minister of State for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Saira Afzal Tarar has said an ordinance has been promulgated to run the affairs of Pakistan Medical and Dentil Council. Addressing a press conference, the minister said that under the Pakistan Medical and Dentil Council (Amendment) Ordinance 2014 promulgated by the president, there will be a seven-member management committee. She said that the committee will look after the matters of PMDC consisting of seven professionals from field of medicine, law and finance to exercise all the power vested in the Council by the ordinance. The minister said that the federal government will nominate one of the seven persons as the chairperson of the said committee. Pakistan Medical & Dental College is the sole regulatory body for ensuring, amongst other objectives, minimum standards of education in the institutions rendering services in our country and preparing our future doctors. The decisions and policies put into force by this Regulator affects every life in the country. Separately, the federal government on Thursday dissolved Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) and suspended its executive committee over forged election of its members. The president issued a presidential ordinance on the directives of prime minister to dissolve the PMDC so as to conduct new and transparent election while selecting members its executive committee. According to media reports the standing committee has found that fake election were held in the selection process of the PMDC members which led to the dissolution. The seven member executive committee of PMDC was suspended. The Presidential ordinance said that transparent and free election will be held for the appointment in PMDC under the supervision of interim system.
