Political, military leadership on same page: Nisar

Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Tuesday said that the political and military leadership of the country were on the same page on issues of national security.

Talking to journalists after a meeting on the country’s internal security chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the interior minister said that the political and military leadership held detailed discussions on the Internal Security Policy (ISP).

More such meetings are expected to be held to discuss the internal security of the country, he added. The minister said the ISP would be implemented according to the timelines. He also said the leadership focused on issues of capacity building of security forces and increasing coordination among 26 of the intelligence agencies working in the country, adding that a joint intelligence directorate would be set up to coordinate activities of the intelligence agencies. He said the leadership was informed about the dialogue with the Taliban and the participants expressed their confidence on the process. The minister said the objective of all the efforts was to make Pakistan secure.

Referring to the handing over of keys of bomb disposal vehicles by the prime minister to the four chief ministers at a ceremony after the meeting on security, Nisar said it was for the first time in the last many years that any equipment was handed over to the provinces to combat terrorism.

He said the previous governments showed criminal negligence during the last 13 years due to which situation of law and order worsened.

The minister said that 65 bomb disposal vehicles would be handed over to the four provinces in total in the coming months, mentioning that the personnel of bomb disposal squads were defusing bombs with their bare hands in the most modern of times.
