Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah announced on Monday that the ban on inducting new police officers had been lifted.
He said 10,000 new police officers would be inducted in Sindh, adding that 2,500 of them would be appointed in the city. The new appointed police officers will work as special force officers and will be posted in those areas of Karachi where there has been an increase in terrorist activities and target killings.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif advised the chief minister to lift the ban on appointment of new officers.
PROPOSALS FOR IGP
According to sources, three names have been suggested for the position of Inspector General (IG) of Police by the federal government to the Sindh government.
The federal govt have suggested the names of Mushtaq Sakhera, Captain (r) Liaquat and Mir Zubair Muhammad. The office of top cop in the province has been lying vacant for almost a month since former IG Shahid Nadeem Baloch retired on February 20.
Additional Inspector General of Crime Investigation Department (CID) Iqbal Mehmood provisionally took over reigns of the Sindh IG after Baloch’s retirement.
Previously, the Sindh government had suggested former Karachi police chief Iqbal Mehmood and former Sindh police chief Fayyaz Leghari for the post but the federal government said DIG Farooq Ameen Qureshi, and National Highways and Motorway Police Inspector General Zulfiqar Ahmed Cheema were being considered as Baloch’s successors.
Does the CM have the integrity to ensure that these Law Officers will be allowed to work as professionals without party political harassment or patronage or interference from feudal lords?
Police appointments, promotions and transfers must be based on transparent merit unblemished by empire building or nepotism. All communication with them by ministers and politicians must be documented on paper. Whimsical political intervention in service matters must be barred.
If we want fair, non partisan law enforcement and not strong arm enforcers for thuggish politicians, bureaucrats or powerful vested interests the integrity of the police has to be ensured.
