Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) has launched Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) website, in an effort to provide information for the solution of natural resources and environmental issues.

MAB programme is an interdisciplinary effort of United nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), directed towards providing an opportunity for international cooperation.

“It has a focus for the coordination of related programme aimed at improving the management of natural resources and the environment”, Director PMNH Muhammad Rafique told APP.

He said PMNH has been declared the country secretariat of MAB-Pakistan, adding the website will be hosted by PMNH and Pakistan Science Foundation(PSF).

The MAB programme was launched in 1970s. The Biosphere Reserves are areas designated under the UNESCO`s MAB programme to serve as places to test different approaches for integrated management of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine resources and biodiversity.

Pakistan’s National MAB Committee was reconstituted in 2012 to revive the programme. The Federal Secretary Science and Technology was designated as chairman of the Committee and the PSF Chairman as its Co-Chairman.

All the major stakeholders including representatives of UNESCO, IUCN, WWF, provincial secretaries of Forests and Wildlife Departments and Director General of Environment and Climate Change are its members.
