Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani on Friday said the Punjab government has failed to provide protection to people.
He gave these remarks while presiding over a three-member bench during the hearing of suo motu notice on self immolation of a female student in District Muzaffargarh.
He also said, “Protecting the fundamental rights of people is responsibility of state, but it is not discharging this obligation. Protest move is gaining momentum owing to encroachment on rights of people every day. If the current state of affairs prevails then rulers’ throne will not remain safe.”
Justice Jillani said, “Enough is enough. We cannot see people dying on the roads. The government should play its role in protecting the lives of people.”
The CJP expressed displeasure over the absence of the Punjab advocate general (AG) and ordered that he should appear I the court on next hearing.
Justice Jillani observed, “We have come to know about the girl that she has expired.”
The Punjab assistant advocate general said he was not aware of the incident. “Please give time and I will give report after obtaining the information from authorities concerned.”
The CJP said, “Contact the provincial government and tell us what it is doing. People have to burn to death on roads. This is not justice. All the details need to be provided on March 17.”
The court sought reply from the Punjab government, Punjab IG and Muzaffargarh DPO on self immolation of the girl on March 17.
Amna Bibi, resident of Tehsil Jatoi of Muzaffargarh was abducted by Nadir and his four accomplices on her way to college on January 5 and gang raped. Her parents lodged a case with police. Police registered the case but did not arrest the culprits.
The investigation officer after interrogation declared the accused persons innocent. After which a disappointed Amna Bibi put herself on fire outside the police station. She was shifted to Nishtar Hospital where she succumbed to burn injuries.
