IHC issues notices to ISI DG and interior secretary over disappearance of Pindi resident
The Supreme Court on Thursday resumed hearing of the missing persons’ case during which Additional Attorney General Tariq Khokhar informed the court that a witness, Imran Munir, had agreed to record his statements regarding the disappearance of Masood Janjua.
During the hearing, an email by Imran Munir was read out by AAG in the court, according to which the witness mentioned that he did not wish to return to Pakistan.
Moreover, Khokar notified the court that Munir had surrendered his passport while seeking asylum in Sri Lanka under the UN charter.
The attorney general further told the court that SP Potohar Division, Haroon Joya, was sent to Sri Lanka in order to record a statement.
Imran Munir had said he would not provide his statement to anyone except the Supreme Court and suggested that the court could record his statement through a video link.
The court inquired from Additional Attorney General Tariq Khokhar, the facility to record the statement via a video link was available and instructed him to verify and inform the court. The court subsequently adjourned the hearing of the case.
Earlier on February 8, the commission of inquiry on enforced disappearances had informed the Supreme Court that the case of Masood Janjua did not fall within the domain of “enforced disappearance”.
The court had referred the case of Masood Janjua on October 12 last year, missing for a long time, to the commission headed by retired SC judge Javed Iqbal on the grounds that it had more time to deeply go into controversies.
Amina, wife of Masood Janjua, insists that her husband is alive but detained in a safe house.
Separately, the Islamabad High Court on Thursday issued notices to the ISI director general and interior secretary and sought a reply in a week over the disappearance of Muhammad Arif, a resident of Rawalpindi.
A single member bench of the court comprising of Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi heard the case and issued notices.
A resident of Rawalpindi, Parveen Bibi, filed a petition in the court through her counsel Zafar Hasan over the disappearance of her husband Muhammad Arif. The interior secretary and ISI DG have been made respondent in the case.
In the petition she adopted the stance that her husband went missing four months back from Rawalpindi along with two other people.
According to the petitioner, the two other persons have returned and they had said that they along with Arif had been kept in captivity by an intelligence agency.
The court issued notices to the interior secretary and ISI DG and sought reply in a week.
