Another two children died in the famine-hit Tharparkar district of Thar desert in Sindh on Tuesday, officials said.

According to medics, two infants died on Tuesday morning increasing the death toll to 131.

As many as 56 people, including 21 children, are still under treatment at the civil hospital.

On the other hand, Pakistan Army, other government organisations and NGOs are engaged in providing food and medical facilities to the drought-affected people.

According to the ISPR‚ 110 tonnes of food items were distributed among the people of area during the last three days.

The army also has set up six medical camps at Mithi‚ Islamkot‚ Diplo Nangar Parker‚ Chahchard amd Kanser for purpose of providing quick medical facilities to the misery-hit people. Army doctors have so far extended medical facilities to 4,000 people so far, the ISPR said.

Last week, officials were alarmed by media reports from Mithi, one of the least developed and most remote districts in southern Sindh, suggesting that more than 200 people had died because of famine and malnutrition.

On Monday, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah had said that the cause of the deaths would be confirmed by formal investigations but apparently pneumonia and malnutrition were among the reasons.

The Thar desert begins around 300 kilometres (200 miles) from Karachi and runs up to the border with India where it joins the Rajasthan desert.

Poor health and communication infrastructure keeps the district disconnected from mainstream population.
