Additional Session Judge Rafaqat Awan, who was killed in the attack on the district courts in Islamabad on Monday, was accidently shot dead by his own guard, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar told members of the National Assembly on Thursday.

Nisar revealed that Judge Awan had suffered three bullet wounds when his guard impulsively fired his weapon as a suicide explosion occurred nearby.

The interior minister made other revelations about the ongoing investigation into the Islamabad court attack that has left 12 dead and 28 injured.

He said that intelligence and security agencies had obtained information on Wednesday that pointed towards the perpetrators of this incident, however it was too early to say who was behind the attacks with complete confidence. He conceded, however, that the target of the attack was a judge who coincidentally was not in court that day.

He cautioned lawmakers against “rushing to conclusions” as it interferes with ongoing investigations, and assured them that perpetrators will be found and brought to justice.
