ECP wants power to ‘leave its mark’

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asked for resolving matters of delimitation of constituencies in the provinces through legislation at federal level.

A three-member bench of Supreme Court (SC) headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani was hearing the case.

ECP’s counsel Akram Sheikh argued that provincial laws related to delimitation be nullified, declaring them unconstitutional. He insisted that legislation be made at federal level to delegate powers to ECP in connection with delimitation of constituencies.

The high court had nullified laws related to constituencies to the extent of Punjab. He demanded that ECP be empowered for delimitation of constituencies.

After hearing the arguments, the CJP adjourned the hearing till Monday, saying that the court wanted to hear the attorney general’s stance before passing the judgement.
