Indian woman burnt to death by husband allegedly for kissing Rahul Gandhi

An Indian woman was allegedly burnt to death by her husband after the incident of the wife kissing the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on his cheek during a public gathering in Assam, Indian media reported on Saturday.

The woman, Bonti Chutia, belonged to a traditional court (panchayat) from Congress under the Titabor Assembly constituency of Jorhat represented by the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

According to reports, the woman had a fight with her husband over the event on February 26 and he reportedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

She was taken to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Police officials confirmed that the deceased woman had attended the public gathering on Gandhi a day before she was killed.

“The woman died due to severe burn injuries. But we do not have any report about whether her husband had set her afire. There are no complaints to this effect either. Moreover, we have checked the video of Rahul Gandhi’s interactive session and found that she was nowhere close to him throughout the function,” Kulendra Deka, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Titabor told a newspaper.

The husband also tried set himself on fire afterwards and received burn injuries as a result.

He is currently under treatment at a hospital and is in a critical condition.

On Wednesday, at least two women had kissed Rahul Gandhi during his interactive session with women in Jorhat.
