UN adopts Syria aid access resolution

UNITED NATIONS-

The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on access to humanitarian aid in Syria.

The resolution demands cross-border aid access and condemns rights abuses by the Syrian government.

It also demands that Syrian government and opposition forces must allow aid convoys to reach civilians across the country.

The agreed text does not threaten sanctions – but warns of “further steps” if the sides do not comply.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has been asked to report back to the council in 30 days on the implementation of the resolution.

The United Nations says there are 9.3 million people in need of help in Syria and over 100,000 have been killed in the civil war.
