An anti-polio campaign was conducted in 24 union councils of six districts of the city amid tight security on Sunday.
During the campaign, around 0.5 million children were inoculated against polio virus. In Karachi, the drive has been launched in 24 union councils which included UC 4, 5 and 8 of Gadap Town; UC 10, 11, 12 and 13 of Gulshan-i-Iqbal; UC 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Baldia; UC 1, 2 and 3 of Orangi; UC 7, 8 and 9 of SITE; UC 2, 3 and 4 of Bin Qasim; UC 1 and 2 of Landhi Town; UC 9 of Saddar Town and UC 8 of Gulberg Town.
Motorcyclists were banned in the UCs from 10 am to 6 pm as section 144 was imposed in the areas where police parties were providing security to polio workers and volunteers. Second phase of the immunization will start on 27th and 28th.
Meanwhile, officials announced that the vaccination drive is being postponed in five UCs – UC 1 and 2 of Landhi Town and UC 2, 3 and 4 of Bin Qasim – where the driver will resume on Monday. Special measures were taken to ensure foolproof security during the anti-polio campaign in the metropolis. The Sindh government imposed ban on motorcycle riding in the concerned union councils till Monday evening. Around 3,000 police, commandoes and Rangers personnel were also deployed for the security of polio teams.
