IIUI’s ‘imprisoned’ female students recovered

IIUI DG terms incident drama, says students don’t want to abide by hostel rules

Three female students of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) who had been reportedly confined in hostel by the university administration were recovered on Saturday.

Islamabad Session Judge Wajid Ali Abbasi raided hostel of IIUI and recovered female students, allegedly kept in illegal detention.

According to reports, IIUI administration had allegedly imprisoned three female students of the university namely Romana, Hiba and Neelum in hostel from Friday evening with “no food and water” and threatened them of serious consequences.

After 18 hours of imprisonment, two of them were recovered by students while one was recovered by judicial officials.

PhD student Neelum said that they had protested against the “impermissible attitude” of the IIUI administration resulting in cancellation of their hostel membership and they went to court which granted them stay order.

“When the administration tried to vacate our rooms, we showed them the stay order, upon which the administration locked us in,” she added.

Other students alleged that hostel rent was increased by the administration, after which a forcible eviction was underway.

The three students alleged that hostel security in-charge Colonel Amjad had barred other students from contacting them.

Hostel administration, on the other hand, said these students had completed their education, after which they were asked to leave the premises, and only empty rooms were locked.

Administration further claimed that the student intentionally locked herself in the room.

IIUI Director General (DG) Gulzar Khwaja rejecting the accusations regarding confining female students of the university said that it was all a staged drama.

The DG said that the three students were initially given a show-cause notice and then were later expelled from hostel upon violating the varsity rules. After the action, the students protested against the implementation of hostel timings and they wanted to be “independent”, which was against the discipline of the hostel.

According to police sources, no evidence found indicating that the hostel management kept her locked. However, investigations are underway.
