Three militants killed in crossfire in Kabul

KABUL-

Three militants were killed in Kabul on Friday , following a suicide attack and gun battle with police, officials say.

One of the men detonated explosives inside a van as he drove up to local government offices in Sarobi, 50km east of the Afghan capital.

Two men then opened fire before they were killed by police during the crossfire.

One policeman was killed and two others were wounded during the attack, according to police officials.

The main highway between Kabul and Jalalabad, near the Pakistan border, was closed after the event.

The incident comes as Afghanistan is preparing to hold presidential elections on 5 April.

The attack occurred in the same location where presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah escaped an ambush on Wednesday as his convoy returned from a campaign.

Security has been stepped up across many parts of Afghanistan with the upcoming elections as Taliban have threatened to target the presidential campaigns of 11 candidates standing to replace President Hamid Karzai.
