PESHAWAR-
At least 35 militants were killed when jets bombed Taliban hideouts in North Waziristan early on Thursday.
The event comes a day after the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) offered a ceasefire if the Army stopped targeting them, security officials said.
On Wednesday TTP peace mediators said they were ready to observe a ceasefire to allow the resumption of peace talks, provided Pakistani security forces stopped killing and arresting them.
The peace talks between the Taliban and the government stalled this week due to a recent surge in insurgent attacks and a claim by a Taliban faction on Sunday that it had killed 23 kidnapped soldiers.
Government mediators set a ceasefire as a precondition for another round of talks.
“Airstrikes were carried out to target militant hideouts with precision. A huge cache of arms and ammunition have also been destroyed,” the security official said.
A second security official in Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan said that jet fighters began pounding targets around 12:30 a.m., with the attack continuing for more than an hour.
According to security sources, scores of others were also injured in the airstrikes.
The first strike was launched on the hideout of Abu Sattar, killing him, followed by strikes on Uzbek, Turkmen and Tajik hideouts.
The latter strike killed a Tajik commander.
Meanwhile, the fifth strike was launched on a TTP hideout, killing 15 militants whereas jets also pounded TTP commander Abdur Razzak’s hideout. In total, 35 suspected militants were killed.
However, the deaths of only 15 militants could be confirmed by official sources.
“There are confirmed reports of 15 militants including foreigners killed in these airstrikes,” said a senior security official, adding that the attacks focused on the town of Mir Ali and surrounding areas of North Waziristan.
Residents in the area said the Taliban compound caught fire after the attack, with flames visible through the night.
A resident in the area who requested anonymity said some of the residents and their families were seen moving to safer places after the airstrikes.
The TTP have been waging a bloody campaign against the Pakistani state since 2007, carrying out a number of bomb and gun attacks, often on military targets.
Militants killed an Army major near Peshawar on Tuesday, and a soldier died in a separate border post attack the same day in South Waziristan, security officials said.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced the start of talks with the Taliban on Jan. 29 to “give peace another chance” following a seven-year insurgency that has claimed nearly 7,000 lives.
But continued Taliban attacks forced government negotiators to suspend the talks and ask for a ceasefire. The Taliban said that the recent attacks were to avenge the alleged extra-judicial murder of comrades in government custody.
Pakistani jets also pounded militant hideouts in North Waziristan last month, following a wave attacks against security forces.
Well Done! May God go with you and protect you!
the patience of the govt was taken as their weakness.the govt and the loyal army have answered your queries about your ceasefire and rubbed imu's nose in your unwashed turbans for doubting the army's capability!
Awesome 🙂
DESTROY Taliban!
Military victories are easy to achieve but political victories are much more difficult and take much longer. Pakistan lost the latter the day TTP was accepted as a equal partner in the so called "TALKS"
Awesome Love Pak Afwaj 🙂
I hope the government will couple this action with arrests of TTP supporters in other parts of the country…it is time for Pakistanis to come to the aid of their country…any mullahs who start defending the TTP in mosques should be identified to authorities and arrests and detentions should follow…the enemy is within Pakistan and action against militant murderers should be done in conjunction with action against their traitorous supporters who are undermining the work of the military.
Taliban have asked to resume talks but the Government should not accept it and make the operation in full swing inorder to eliminate this menace once and for all. On the other hand the people in general must get up against their supporters i.e. Jamat Islami, JUI and PTI.
