The government committee has asked the Taliban committee to ask the militants to announce a one-month ceasefire and release all those people they have abducted over the years without any conditions and in return the government would consider releasing the elderly, woman and children, if any, in custody of the security forces.
The government committee asked the Taliban representatives to submit a list of all such prisoners to them for forwarding it to the authorities concerned and they would also provide a list of names of people allegedly in Taliban custody. It is expected that the two lists would be exchanged in the next few days.
According to sources, during Friday’s meeting between the two sides, the Taliban committee had proposed a ceasefire for a limited period but the government committee insisted that the attacks should cease for at least a month.
Meanwhile, talking to reporters in Lahore on Saturday, Yousuf Shah, a member of the Taliban nominated team said the nation would get “good news” within two days.
Talking on the sidelines of a clerics’ meeting convened by Maulana Samiul Haq, Shah said that anti-peace activities would be brought to a halt as a formal ceasefire was being discussed.
Shah also said that there was no demand under discussion regarding imposition of Sharia in the country. He said that the members would try to address the concerns of the religious parties but it would take some time to yield positive results.
