The Commissioner of Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) on Saturday reserved his judgment in the Dr Shakil Afridi case and will be announcing the decision on March 15.
The case submitted to the Fata Tribunal was heard by Commissioner Frontier Crime Regulation (FCR) capt (retd) Munir Azam.
Afridi’s lawyers Samiullah and Qamar Nadeem appeared in the court and appealed against their client’s conviction, requesting the court to declare the judgment null and void.
They also pleaded that Afridi should be given a chance and be heard by a jirga under the FCR law.
After hearing the arguments, the commission reserved its judgement which could be announced in a month’s time.
Dr Afridi had helped the CIA by running a fake vaccination campaign in Abbottabad a month before the US forces raid on a compound that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011.
In May 2012, he was sentenced to 33 years in prison and fined Rs 320,000 on charges of colluding with Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and its chief, Mangal Bagh.
The tribal court had not entertained evidence relating to Shakil Afridi’s involvement with the CIA, citing lack of jurisdiction.
His sentenced was overturned this year in August and a retrial was ordered.
