Two jailed in Bangladesh for life over teenager rape

DHAKA-

Two men were sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday by Bangladesh court for the rape of a teenage girl.

A district judge ruled the verdict in the town of Manikganj after the two men, a bus driver and his helper, were found guilty of raping a teenage garment worker.

According to prosecutor Abdus Salam, the helper was found guilty of rape while the driver was convicted of aiding and abetting him.

“Finding the 17-year-old garment worker alone on the bus, the driver first attempted to rape her on the moving vehicle. But later they stopped the bus near a river station where the helper raped her with the driver aiding him,” Salam said.

“They are both sentenced to a life term, which means each of them, must serve a minimum 32 years in jail,” he said.

The event took place in January 2013, sparking protest across the capital of Dhaka. It followed the fatal gang-rape of a student in Delhi, India a month ago.
