A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Monday granted bail to former MNA Rashid Akbar Nawani and former MPA Saeed Akbar Nawani in fake degree cases.
The bench directed the Nawani brothers to submit two surety bonds of Rs 1,00,000 each to avail the bail. The bench headed by Justice Muhammad Anwaar-ul-Haq passed the orders on bail applications in appeals filed by the Nawani brothers against a trial court sentence in fake degree cases.
Earlier, petitioners’ counsel arguing before the court submitted that a trial court had awarded 5-year jail to the brothers for submitting fake degrees to contest the 2002 election.
He contended that the trial court did not fulfil legal requirements for sentence and failed to appreciate case facts. The counsel said that the petitioners were not part of the election process as they had withdrawn their nomination papers before scrutiny. He contended that filing of nomination papers did not fall under corrupt practices which was punishable under Section 82 of the People’s Representation Act 1976.
