Around one million Lahorities suffering from the disease
Over 1000,000 Lahorities have been suffering from diabetes which should be handled properly in future to reduce diabetics, stated Head of Diabetes Management Centre of Services Hospital Prof Khadija Irfan Khawaja on Sunday.
She said in 2000 Pakistan was ranked sixth with 5.2 million patients of diabetes in the world which had became fifth in 2013 with 13.9 million diabetics. She said in the city number of diabetics were increasing at a ratio of ten percent.
She said in Diabetes Management Centre of Services Hospital only 5,157 diabetics were recorded in 2002 which had reached to 60,823 patients in 2013 and this figure was escalating rapidly and continuously.
A spread of diabetes in the country needed some immediate measures and public awareness was must to control it, she added.
Prof Khadija said it had been observed that a ratio of diabetes in women was much higher than men in the country.
She said mostly women had no opportunity to walk and exercise as they often remained in houses due to which ratio of diabetes in women were observed two-third as compared to men.
She pointed out that diabetes was increasing in urban population with a ratio of 10 percent while its ratio in rural people was comparatively less.
She said sedentary lifestyle and obesity were main reasons and people did not avail an opportunity of walk and exercise.
While a trend of double job among people was also a contributory factor as they had not time to walk and exercise.
She said at least 30 minutes exercise daily was must for a diabetic to live healthy life.
