Residents demand action against drug addicts, peddlers

Because of the slackness of police and anti-narcotics department, the number of drug peddlers and addicts is increasing in the garrison city.

The drug addicts can be seen at various areas of the city including Asghar Mall, Mureer Hassan, Moti Mehal, Chungi No 22, Bakra Mandi and Waris Khan. The suppliers of narcotics approach the drug addicts in the areas and sell heroin and other drugs to them even in broad daylight.

Shahnawaz Khan, resident of Asghar Mall, said that a group of drug addicts has set up shabby tents on roadside in their area and keep sitting there throughout the day. He said that the addicts also sell narcotics to the other addicts but police seem unaware of their existence and have never taken action against them.

Zia Abbasi, another resident, said that police are reluctant to arrest the addicts as they cannot mint money from them. Moreover, he said, the civil society also is not playing their due role in ending the menace from the society and do not raise voice against narcotics. He said a mass campaign against drugs is the need of the hour to deal with the deteriorating condition in the society.

The residents appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif to order police and Anti-Narcotics Department to start campaign against the drug peddlers and addicts immediately.
