Punjab University (PU) Syndicate on Saturday decided to serve show-cause notice on Institute of Chemistry’s Prof Dr Zaid Mahmood in plagiarism case on behalf of Syndicate and decided to form a regular probe committee in the light of preliminary enquiry report against Khujista Rehan on complaint of students for not taking their classes and use of abusive language against University Law College’s In-charge Admission Farooq Umair Niazi.
The PU Syndicate’s 1705th meeting was held at committee room of the vice chancellor’s office. PU Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran left the meeting when both the agenda items were placed before the Syndicate for deliberations and Women Development Secretary Irum Bukhari chaired the meeting.
After discussing the plagiarism case of Dr Zaid Mahmood, the Syndicate adopted the policy that action will be taken on plagiarising more than 19 percent material from all sources and plagiarising more than 5 percent material from a single source.
Meanwhile, Dr Zaid Mahmood himself had confessed to plagiarism in his letter. After discussion, the Syndicate decided to serve him show-cause notice under PEEDA Act and provide him opportunity of personal hearing.
The PU Syndicate, in the light of preliminary report, decided to form a three-member regular enquiry committee. PU Institute of Applied Psychology Chairperson Prof Dr Rukhsana Kausar will chair the committee while one member will be taken from Higher Education Department and one from Kinnaird College.
As Syndicate member Prof Dr Shaukat Ali is retiring on Sunday, the Syndicate lauded his services for the university and passed a unanimous resolution. The Syndicate members appreciated him for taking firm stance against political elements and for the truth. The Syndicate also endorsed proceedings of the previous meeting.
