ISLAMABAD
Capital Development Authority (CDA) has achieved 99% coverage of children under age of 5 years during the polio eradication campaign held from 20th to 23rd January 2014. According to CDA spokesperson, the results were evaluated by international agencies including World Health Organization (WHO) independently. Total population of Islamabad is 1.4 million of which CDA is looking after urban sectors which is 2/3rd of population. The objective of this national campaign is to administer polio drops to the children under the age of 5 years in the entire city.
Since polio virus is transmitted in unhygienic and poor sanitary conditions, it was important to cover children in high risk areas with precision.
CDA therefore chalked out a special plan to cover children in the entire city with special emphases on Rural Slums, High Risk Areas in the North West of Islamabad.
The entire city was divided in sixteen zones, each zone targeting from seven thousand to twelve thousand children, A total number of 131,550 children were targeted. Each Zone was lead by a zonal supervisor. 88 sector supervisors were deputed to organize and monitor the field activity.
398 mobile teams comprising of 796 workers went door to door to administer polio drops to the children under the age of 5 years.
In addition, 107 fixed teams were deputed at fixed points at various centers in order to cater for those who were out of houses while the mobile teams had visited their homes.
52 transit teams were established at various locations at different entry and exit points where passengers from surrounding cities and districts are entering Islamabad.
Major areas in addition to urban planned Islamabad that were targeted include Golra Sharif, Ternol, Sangjani, Noon, Jhangi Saydan, Budhana Kalan, Dhok Paracha, Pind Pracha. Drek Mori, I-1, Bokhara, Mera Badia.
